VINTAGE KIMBERLY PURE WOOL SWEATER AND MATCHING SKIRT

This garment does not carry the Woolmark label instituted in 1964 so we can be fairly certain this predates 1964.

If we look at the style we can see it is most likely a 50’s garment.

Certain other factors place this in the 50’s, the incorporation of a heavy nylon stabilizer where the buttons go,

the embroidered tag, the elastic waistband.

The style with the appliquéd roses and wool covered buttons and the ribbed skirt all contribute to dating this as 50’s.

There are a few loose threads on the inside but nothing that shows on the exterior and this makes for an excellent rating in my book. See measurements, as there is no size tag on either piece.

The sweater sports 3 appliquéd roses on the left and one on the right, 5 wool covered buttons with heavy nylon stabilizer so the fabric will not enlarge, and nice piping on the cuffs to match the lines of the skirt and to allow for an elastic property through the weave.

The sweater:

Shoulder seam to seam across the back 32 inches 81.5cm relaxed

The weave allows for some stretch and at the shoulder it will go to 40 inches 101.5cm

I’m not sure how much of this you would want to take advantage of as the look may not be all that great but I would say a couple sizes wouldn’t hurt especially in the bust area.

Bust 36 inches 91.5cm to 46 inches 117cm

Underarm 34 inches 86.5cm to 44 inches 112cm

Waist 32 inches 81.5cm to 40 inches 101.5cm

Length nape of neck at seam to bottom back 17 inches 43cm

Sleeve length top shoulder seam to end cuff 16.5 inches 42cm

Cuff opening 3.5 inches 9cm to 6 inches 15cm

Bottom which is piped and has a lot of stretch 26 inches 66cm to 38 inches 96.5cm

I want to reiterate that this is a stretch or give as a result of the weave and if you use too much it will not look proper. You do not want to go more than 2 sizes over the relaxed size if you want this to look natural and fitted. I would say you could get by with up to a 40 in the bust as one expects a bit of stretch there but elsewhere I would not push beyond 4 inches of the relaxed size.

Also because of the weave this has give in all directions.

The skirt:

There is a slight opening of the seam where the waistband was inserted that could easily be sewn closed without it showing and would only take a few stitches by hand. If I had the time I would do this myself and still might if I find time.

The waistband appears like new and makes one think it may have been replaced. Of this I cannot be sure.

All in all excellent condition.
